Will My Slipped Disc Heal on Its Own?

Man standing outside, suffering from back pain

A herniated spinal disc, also known as a slipped disc, is a relatively common cause of back pain among adults. This issue can cause sharp, excruciating pain. It can be utterly miserable! If you are suffering from this problem, you might wonder if it will resolve on its own or if you will need to see a doctor for care. This blog post explains what you should know about recovering from a slipped disc.

Recovery Timeline for a Slipped Disc

There are no universal rules on how long it takes to recover from a slipped disc; your healing journey will depend on the severity of your condition, your overall health, and other factors. It is encouraging to note, though, that this issue does often resolve on its own with little to no medical intervention.

Some people find that their symptoms start to resolve within just a few weeks (2 – 4). Others experience symptoms that stretch on for months.

Home Remedies that Might Help

You can reduce your pain and support your body’s ability to heal from a slipped disc by taking some simple steps:

  • Rest and Activity Adjustments: Taking short breaks from physical activity may help alleviate intense pain, but remaining inactive for too long can hinder your recovery. Move carefully, avoid overexerting yourself, and steer clear of twisting motions that could worsen discomfort. You can gradually return to normal activities as your symptoms improve.
  • Cold and Heat Application: Using a cold pack on the painful area can help reduce swelling and inflammation. Applying heat, such as a warm towel or heating pad, may ease muscle tension and promote relaxation, thereby providing additional relief.
  • Nonprescription Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, including ibuprofen or naproxen, are available over the counter and can be effective in managing pain and lowering inflammation related to a slipped disc.
  • Gentle Stretching Exercises: Performing light stretching routines that do not place strain on your back can help maintain your flexibility and prevent stiffness. Consult with a healthcare professional or physical therapist to learn appropriate stretches for your specific situation.
  • Maintain Proper Posture: Paying attention to your body alignment while sitting, standing, and lifting objects is important for reducing stress on the spine. Practice good posture throughout daily activities to support your spinal health.
  • Supportive Sleeping Position: Choosing a mattress that offers adequate support and sleeping in a position that keeps your spine aligned can aid in recovery and reduce discomfort overnight.

When to See a Doctor

Slipped discs can often heal on their own, but it is still wise to see a doctor, especially if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Persistent pain that continues despite several weeks of self-care.
  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the legs or feet.
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control.
  • Difficulty walking or maintaining your balance.

After they learn about your case, your care provider might recommend one of the following:

  • Physical Therapy: A personalized exercise regimen has the potential to strengthen your back and enhance flexibility.
  • Medications: Prescription pain relievers or muscle relaxants may be recommended to alleviate severe symptoms.
  • Epidural Steroid Injections: These injections are used to decrease inflammation and relieve pain in specific areas of the spine.
  • Regenerative Medicine: Treatments such as stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and prolotherapy can help improve the body’s natural healing processes.
  • Surgery: Surgery may be required in rare instances to address a slipped disc.

A slipped disc can be extremely painful! Take appropriate measures to help your spine heal so you can get back to enjoying your life.
